  11. SUBJECT:  MGT - Tell it like it is!
  12.          Experienced volunteers of all kinds in government serv-
  13. ice are accustomed to callouts where they are recalled while
  14. enroute, or told to return upon their arrival on scene. Inexperi-
  15. enced volunteers become upset when this happens. As managers we
  16. should stress to potential volunteers that this may happen more
  17. often than not. The point being that your volunteers must be
  18. conditioned to accept this fact. Yes, that's blunt talk but a
  19. necessary truth. Never be bashful when describing your expecta-
  20. tions of your volunteers.  It helps reduce future disappointments
  21. among anyone serving on your regular volunteer staff.
  22.           When you are candid up front, more people will choose
  23. not to join than those who do. But the bonus is that it leaves
  24. you with staff that will be with you for the long haul. I tell
  25. each potential applicant that I expect them to be working with
  26. this agency 5, 10, 15 years down the road. That serves to really
  27. get the individual's attention that we are really not interested
  28. in wasting our time and effort to accomodate "joiners" and "prima
  29. donnas". I have done this for thirty years with communications,
  30. search and rescue, law enforcement, firefighter, and other public
  31. safety volunteers with superb results.
